The Importance of Light When Photographing Your Art

I struggled for years to get a good and accurate image of my paintings. At one time, I was using a digital camera with various settings to get the color accurate, but the room light (natural light) was still the most important element. These days I use my smartphone that has an amazing camera.

Natural light is necessary to get the color as accurate as possible. The best way for me to portray this idea is to show two images of the same painting, one taken with the room lit, and the other with the light off but close to the window. There have been times when I took the art outside; however, that is not always possible due to weather.

Can you see the difference the lighting makes in the two images?

On the right the painting has a golden color. On the left the colors are brighter and more accurate. This is very important if you are submitting to an exhibition. You want to show your art in the best light! (pun intended)
